Chapter 1: Four Places

It all started in four places, Houston,TX, St. Francis,KS, Garden City,KS and NIMH.
We begin in Houston, TX. with Jasper Goff. Jasper is not your average person, he loves to work alone on his experiments at ALSNI (Animal Lifestyle Studies of Natural Intelligence), Jasper's large association for animal research. This is the headquarters for the worlds biggist animal lovers that
Jasper had established in the year of 2002. The date is December 15, 2007, it was a hard days work for Jasper, he's currently on his way home. And now, our story begins.
"I just can't understand why the people of Houston are haveing a hard time understanding that the ALSNI has been haveing a hard time with the mice for years. At first they hated the mice, but now they won't let the association get rid of them... 'Look out!' (as Jasper just miss getting hit by a car running a red light) "I need to stop driving in this city!" Jasper's from the country, and is not used to this type of congestion. All he wanted to do was just get home safly, and go to bed. As soon as he got home to his one story house, he went into his bedroom and feel asleep. Jasper lives in a small home, because he does not think that it is necessary to have a large home for one person. Workers of the association all have large homes. Some even have Mansions. Jasper is the only one that lives in his home.
When morning came, Jasper's clock alarmed loudly. He got out of bed and put on his finest suite, and went strait to work. He did not take baths in the morning, taking a bath in the morning did not make since to him. You take a bath before you go to bed, and then you take a another bath in the morning? What for! What a wast of good water. Of course he did not take a bath last night, he was just too tierd.
As he drove back into the city that he disliked so, he could not help but think that ALSNI is loosing it's touch with the world. (ALSNI is international, and world has known ALSNI to be the worlds best place for pet mice and rats.) RANI just does not seem to control the way the world thinks about the mice anymore. Once Jasper then pulls up into the association's private parking lot.
He finds that the parking lot is full. "What is going on" Jasper asked himself. "Why is there so many cars here?" Once he had parked his truck, he walked over to the main door, and when he steped inside. Hethen sees about three-hundred people. Jasper's first toughs were: "It must be a meeting... That's strange, I am the president of ALSNI I and I didn't even know. I wonder if this has something to do with getting rid of those mice..."
"Hi Jasper!," said one of the three hundred people.
"Hi," Jasper said back in confusion. What is going on here?"
One person stud up out of the crowd, Jasper recognized this face before. It was Harres, one of the workers of ALSNI.
"Don't you know about the complains that we have been getting!"
"No, what complanins?"
"The complains about us getting raid of the mice."
"What!?, and what do you people have do with this?"
Another person stud up from the crowd, and Jasper did not recognize this face.
"We the people of Houston think that you should not get rid of those mice!"
Then a lady from the crowd said "That's right, what have they done to your association that you have to get rid of them?"
"What is wrong with you people?" (Jasper yells) "Harres and the rest of the workrs have noting to do with this!"
"We just came because we are curious just like you," said Emily. (another worker ALSNI)
"Yah," said Andrews. (also a worker)
"This will stop now," (Jasper yelled) "I will not have the ALSNI changing for this city!p>
The crowd gasped
"What! said one man. How dare you," he shouted.
"Out, out, out," yelled Jasper.
"We're never coming back," said one lady.
"Fine by me," said Jasper.
"What did you do that for?" Emily asked.
"I don't know, I wish I was back in Iowa... I can't take this any longer"
As the crowd left, Jasper went on his way to work. He took the elevator up to his office, which is on the 34th floor. When the elevator door opened, Emily was right there in front of him.
"How did you get up here so fast?" Jasper asked.
"I took the 2nd elevator after you left."
"Oh."
"Why don't you just tell the people you are sorry, and that you are just haveing a bad day," Emily asked.
"No... the people of Houston won't buy it, and I don't think that I will be able to run ALSNI anymore.
"Why?"
"Because the people of Houston won't support me when this hits the press."
"But Jasper, what will happen?"
"I don't know Emily, I just don't know."
Jasper went on his way to his office leaving Emily behind. He know that Emily was just worried about the safety of ALSNI, and that she being the manager of world trade, she needs to have a clear mind and not worry about this. Once Jasper opened his office door and went strait to his desk, he sat down in his soft blue office chair, and puts his head on his desk.
We leave Jasper, and head to Garden City, Kansas. Which is not really a city, just a small town in the state of Kansas. The Kansas planes are cool, and windy. The leaves are turing red and orange and falling all over the hills. A family of mice are looking for food in a nearby filed. One of the mice are playing, one is eating, one is looking around for danger, and one is just siting by a small creek. Suddenly someone calls out a name.
"Jonathan!"
"Yes," yelled Jonathan
"Boy come here"
Jonathan, a light gray mouse, ran up the hill to see what the mouse wanted.
"Yes father"
"Let's go home son, I think we have enough food to last the family all winter. Come on Anderson, your mother want's to go back inside!"
Anderson, a dark brown mouse, ran down a hill to get to his father. It looks like Anderson is Jonathan's big brother, and that the other two are there parents. They all walked back to there house. There house is inside a small crack in the side of a brick building. Inside there house there is much to look, they did not have that much valuables. They only have two rooms, one for the parents and one for the children. They have a little corner were they put there food, one old chair, and two sponges they collected that they made into a bed. Once they got inside ther house Jonathan and Anderson went the there room. They went to sleep. The father is putting the food that they collected in the corner, and the mother is sleeping in the old chair. The Brisbys made it though another winter.
Now we go to St. Frsncis, Kansas. Which is also a city in the state of Kansas. Here we find a group of rats playing in the snow. One of the rats is watching the rats playing in the snow. The rat is light gray and seems to be older than the rest of the rats. The rat called out "Justin" Justin is a dark brown rat and seems to be the playful type. He then ran up to the rat calling him.
"Yes Nicodemus," replied Justin.
"Do you know were your mother is?"
Justin sat down beside Nicodemus and his smile was slowly dropping.
"I don't think your mother is coming back any time soon."
"I know, I just wish that she would come back to stay with us. Why did she go? She did not even tell me, you had to tell me."
"Justin, Don't worry about it. Your mother loves you, and she will return someday."
"I hope so," siad Justin.
Isabell (Justin's sister) is making a snow rat, and is having hard time putting the head on the top. Justin sees her and goes over to help her. Unlike most brothers and sisters, Justin and Isabell are nice to each other and help each other out when they can. Nicodemus is very proud of them both.
The rats have a place were they get food every night. Famer's Market was the name of the place no the edge of the town. Every morning the farmes came with trucks full of fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat and grain. The rats would go in making sure that no one was there, and quietly go down the aisle to where the food is. Jenner (one of Nicodmemus's friends) is in charge of keeping an eye out for danger.
Once they were done eating, most of the rats went home, but some stayed and played all night until morning. They had to leave before the farmers restock the store, and the ones that stayed all night were in charge of cleaning up so the humans would not know that they were in here. Life went on like this for the rats for days and months, but not years. NIMH was coming.
Meanwhile at the National Institute of Mental Health in Wichita, Kansas. Dr. Valentine, Dr. Necros, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Peterson, Dr. Westchace, student George and student Julie were into a new scientific study, and they needed more mice and rats.
"What can we do, the population of mice and rats in this city has dropped tremendously," said Dr. Necros.
"I have know idea. We must find a place that is full of mice and rats," said Dr. Peterson.
"How about New York?" asked George.
"No... New York is too far away from here. We need to find a place here in Kansas," said Dr. Necros.
"But where?" ask George.
"Get out the map and see what location we can find," said Dr. Valentine.
"OK," said George.
George ran to go get the map, this kind of thing is exciting to George. The other scientists think that George should be more serious, especially Dr. Necros, who is not very nice to the students. He thinks that children should not work at NIMH, even though Geroge and Julie are both nineteen.
Once George returned with the map of the state, the scientists quickly ran over to the map that George had placed on a clear, brown smooth table.
"This is it," said Dr. Valentine.
"Where do you think we should look Dr. Valentine?" asked Dr. Westchace.
"I think we should look here, in the northwest corner of the state.
"The town to the extreme northwest is St. Francis," said Dr. Westchace," but why look there?"
"In the far west of this state there are less people and more food and shelter. This would be as good of place as any to look.
"OK," said Dr. Jackson, "let's get going."
They all got ready to leave to go on a long journey to the northwest part of the state. They would have to drive about 500 miles non stop, to make time. The vans are white company Ford vans that NIMH has had since 1963, but they still work just as good as they had back then, and their vans have four full gas tanks, so they can make it. Dr. Valentine, Dr. Peterson, Julie, and Dr. Westchace all went in van unit 06.
"Dr. Valentine is driving first," said Julie.
"That's fine with me," said Dr. Valentine.
Dr. Jackson and George took van unit 07, and Dr. Jackson is driving. Dr. Necros went alone in van unit 08. Van unit 06 is in front, followed by van unit 07, and then van unit 08. They left the parking lot, and went down fourthrow St. They stayed close to each other so as to not let anyone get in between them. As soon as they got to Highway 213 North, they picked up there speed to 75, and now there really on there way.
They drove for days and nights no stop, about 400 miles. They went on up Highway 213 until it turned into Highway 81 North. Then they got to the point to where they had to turn west on Highway 36 West. They have plenty of food that is in the back of the van where they are going to put the mice and rats. They do stop at bathroom gas stations, but not for long. They still have about 100 miles to go.
It has been hours now since they have seen any buildings on the side of the road.
"We must be almost there," said Dr. Valentine.
"We had better be," yelled Dr. Necros on his AC radio.
They are able to talk to each other by AC radio that is built into the van units.
"Dr. Valentine stopped the van.
"I think that this is the place, but I am not sure," said Dr. Valentine.
"Dr Westchace, do you think this is it?" asked Dr. Valentine. "Dr. Westchace! Dr. Westcace! Where is he?"
"He is asleep in the back," said Dr. Peterson.
"Ha Ha,"laugh Dr. Valentine."Do you think we are here?"
"I think so," said Dr. Peterson.
"Good than we can stop here, and look, we only used a half a tank of gas to get here!"
"Yah, these Ford vans are good on gas," said Dr. Westchace who had just woke up and heard the conversation.
"Oh, good your up!" said Dr. Peterson.
"What time is it?" asked Dr. Westchace.
"6:06 AM," replied Dr. Peterson.
"OK, let's start looking," yelled Dr. Valentine.
"Now?" said Julie who was also awake.
"Yes, we need to get an early start," said Dr. Valentine.
They got out of there vans, woke up everyone that was asleep, and got the equipment off the top of the vans. It is sunrise, and the sky is clear and turning sunny. The air is cool and dry, with a little frost on the ground. As the seven scientists look in all directions in the fields, the rats that they are searching for are near by.
