Chapter 3: The Tests

The building of NIMH looks just like Jasper's, except it's not as tall.

Dr. Necros pulls Jasper out by pulling the net out of the van, and then sat the net down on the gray concrete floor. Then he closed both doors, and called out to Dr. Valentine.

"Come on," he said. "Let's go! We need to get Jasper inside his cage."

Jasper heard this.

"What do you mean a cage? You can't put me in a cage! Let me out of here!"

"No, and you will see what your cage looks like very soon."

Dr. Valentine is coming with the net full of rats, and Dr. Peterson is coming with the net full of mice. George, Julie, Dr. Jackson and Dr. Westchace have already walked over to the main entrains to NIMH. They are holding all four doors open to let Dr. Valentine, Dr. Necros and Dr. Peterson in. Dr. Necros pick up the net that Jasper is in, and put the net over his shoulders. Dr. Necros is very strong. He has been lifting heavy objects at NIMH, and has gotten much stronger since he first started working at NIMH when he was 43.

"Come on," said Dr. Necross to Dr. Valentine and Dr. Peterson.

They all walked up to the front doors of NIMH, went inside and stopped at the elevator.

"Now, who will go in first?" asked Dr. Jasckson running behind Dr. Peterson followed by George, Julie and Dr. Jackson.

"It does not matter," said Dr. Necros. "The other elevtor does not work so have to take this one. I will go in first"

Dr. Necros walked inside the elevator, and pushed button 26. They went up to the 26th floor slowly until the elevator stopped. Dr. Necros took the net that Jasper is in over to a very large cage that NIMH used when they had a lab ape. He put the net in the cage, unraveled the net and closed the door.

"I think this cage is just about your size," said Dr. Necros.

"Oh, you think?" said Jasper in a sarcastic way.

"Yep, and you will be the first human to be a lab experiment."

"Why am I not amused," asked Jasper sadly."

"Don't be sad, we will put all the mice and rats that we caught in here with you."

"How considerate of you," said Jasper sarcastically.

"Here they come now," said Dr. Necros seeing the elevator door open.

Dr. Necros went over to the left side of the room. The room that they are in is a small room with many cages that are empty. Some cages are small and some cages are large, but not like the one that Jasper is in. Jasper's cage is silver with one inch bars going diagonally from all four sides.

Dr. Valentine put the rats in cage group 1, and Dr. Peterson put the mice in cage group 2.

"That is it you all, we are done for today," said Dr. Necros. We will begin the tests tomorrow"

"What tests?" Jasper asked.

"You will see," said Dr. Necros.

They all walked out of the room, leaving Jasper and the mice and rats behind to wonder. Then Dr. Necros stopped and turned around.

"I will leave the lights on for you if that's ok," said Dr. Necros.

"Jasper knew that he was not being nice because everyone knows that Jasper does not like bright lights, Dr. Necros truned the lights on bright.

"Thanks a lot," said Jasper in disappointment.

"Your welcome," said Dr. Necros, and he closed the door.

"So, what cha in for?" Jasper asked the mice and rats not expiating an answer from them.

It took a while, but Jasper soon fell asleep on the hard floor of his cage.

Morning came to Wichita at about 6:14, and Jasper was awaken by the sound keys screeching a against the door that Dr. Necros had brought him through. Jasper knew that it must be one of the scientists. The door opened, and Dr. Necros came in. Jasper wish that he could have contact with someone else in the morning than him.

"How are you doing?" asked Dr. Necros.

"What do you think?" Jasper asked.

"Well... it looks like you are going on a date with those cloths on," said Dr. Necros.

Jasper has on his black pants on with a white dress shirt, a long black coat, black dress shoes, a black western hat, and a black vest with a gold and silver pocket watch on it.

"I seriously doubt it," said Jasper.

"Than why do you always dress nice like that?"

"I dress this way to please no one other than myself."

"Look, I know that we had to take you from your home, but don't you feel safer now that you are far away from Houston and safe in your own cage?"

"Maybe you are right at that," said Jasper, "but I still don't like the idea that you put me through that."

"You will get over it," said Dr. Necros.

"Is that so,"

"Yes, it is so, now quite! I need to give you this injection."

"What, what for?" asked Jasper.

"Never you mined," said Dr. Necros.

Dr. Necros called out to Dr. Valentine and Dr. Peterson in the next room to come over an hold Jasper down. They came walking in and went over to Jasper's cage.

"OK," said Dr. Necros. "Open the door."

Dr. Valentine opens the door, and Jasper does not even try to get away.

"Why are you not running?" asked Dr. Necros.

"Because I see that I can not get away from you if I did, so what's the point?"

"A wise decision," said Dr. Necros.

Dr. Valentine healed Jasper's arm out, and Dr. Necros injected Jasper's arm with the clear looking fluid. He injected 1/2 a cups of fluid into Jasper's arm until he was done.

"Well that's it Jasper," said Dr. Necros. "The medicine should take affect on you in about five hours."

Jasper started to feel a little tired and rest against his cage.

"Will he be ok?" asked Dr. Valentine while closing Jasper's cage.

"Yeh, he is just going to be a little drowsy for I while," said Dr. Necros.

They left Jasper and walked over to the rats.

"Twenty rats on series B," said Dr. Valentine. "This group will get no injections, but we will have to prick them with a plain needle."

"What about control group A-20, B-I, B-20 and A-I," asked Dr. Peterson.

"I will take care of that," said Dr. Valentine. "We need to do the tagging so we can start giving them the injectons."

They put there long white gloves on, and begin opening the cages one by one, tagging and injecting the rats. Dr. Necros did not need any help in tagging the rats because the more they squirmed, the less gently Dr. Necros would become. The rats would learn that the more they squirm the tighter they would be held.

Once it is Nicodemus's turn, Dr. Peterson opened his cage door and put his hand inside to reach him. Nicodemus did not know what to do, he had ran to the back of the cage but what for. (Just like that human over there,) Nicodemus thought (he knew that he had no where to go.) Ever sence Nicodemus saw that human in the cage, he just could not figure out why is he in there. Dr. Peterson caught Nicodemus easily, slowly pulled him out, and tagged him, and Dr. Valentine started to give Nicodemus the injection. Nicodemus felt a sharp pain to his hip, then he was injected with orange looking fluid, just like the other rats. Once it was all over, Dr. Peterson slowly put Nicodemus back in his cage, closed the door, and went over to the next cage.

Jasper is able to see what is going on from his cage, and he does not like what sees, but what could he do? Jasper is also tired because of the injection that he got, and could not stay up much longer.

They scientists continued to give the rats there tag and injections, while over on the other side the mice are looking at what may happen to them soon. Jonathan is in a cage by himself looking at both the sicientists and the human that is in the cage to the left of him. The mice are also wondering why the humans put one of there own kind in a cage. Jonathan could only hope that his mother, father and brother are here too. He looked for them, but he just did not have enough room to see in the cage under him. Also Jonathan (young but smart) thought that that human in the cage would be the key to getting out of here someday. (If only I could talk to him,) Jonathan thought.

Back over to the rats, the scientists have one more rat to do. The last rat is Justin, and he just finshed getting his tag and injection. Dr. Peterson slowly be him back in his cage and closed the door.

"Well that's all for the rats," said Dr. Valentine. "Now let's do the mice."

The scientists walked over to the mice with there tags and the injections. Some mice knew what they where coming for and ran to the back of there cage, and some did not. Jonathan saw them coming and did not run. He (like Jasper and Nicodemus) did not see any point. Dr. Peterson opened the cage door next to Jonathan's, and slowly pulled out one of the mice. Then he tagged the mouse and gave it the injection. When he was done he slowly put the mouse back in it's cage, and went on to the next cage.

This process was repetated again and again, and when Dr. Peterson got to the last cage, (Jonathan's cage,) he notice that this mouse is not in the slightest bit of fear.

"Look at this Dr. Valentine," said Dr. Peterson. "This mouse is not even afraid of me, he won't run."

"That is a rear type of mouse," said Dr. Valentine.

Dr. Peterson opened Jonathan's cage door, picked Jonathan up slowly, tagged him, gave him the injection, slowly puts him back in his cage, and then closed the cage door.

"Well that's it," said Dr. Peterson.

"OK Jasper, now do you feel any different?" asked Dr. Necros.

"Look, he's asleep," said Dr. Valentine.

"Good, now we can see what happens when he wakes up," said Dr. Necros.

They all left the room and closed the main door behind them. The lights are still on because there are no windows in the room.

Nicodemus is just looking at the mice across the room in wonder. (Why are we here?) Nicodemus thought, (and why is that human here too?) Nicodemus decided to talk to the rats next to his cage.

"Hello, Hello, is anyone there?" yelled Nicodemus.

"Yes, yes, who are you?" the rat asked.

"My name is Nicodemus."

"hay Nicodemus, it's Suilvan!"

"What Silvan, they caught you too?"

"Yeh, one of the humans found me and some of the others over by the old hill. That human caught a lot of us easily."

"Well... one of them caught me in my house, picked it up in fact!"

"Well we will just have to wate and see what happens," said Suilvan. "But for now, I am going to sleep like that human over there."

Nicodemus decided to go to sleep as well, and see what would happen tomorrow if the scientists are done for the day. He went to sleep in the corner of his cage.

Meanwhile, Jonathan is talking to a mouse next to his cage.

"So that's how you got caught," said Jonathan lessening to the story of how this mouse got caught.

"Yeh, and I still don't know where my parentss are," said the mouse.

"Don't worry," said Jonathan. "I'm sure that thay are here."

"Thanks," said the mouse.

Jonathan (like everyone else) is getting tired, and he could not stay up any longer. So he went to the back of his cage to a little corner, and went to sleep.

Now the room is getting quite, and soon not one sound could be heard. All is asleep. That day the scientists did not come back, they were done for the day.

The next day Dr. Necros, Dr. Valentine and Dr. Peterson came back at about 7:00 in the morning to see how Jasper was doing. Jasper is wide awake and feeling a bit strange.

"How are you doing?" asked Dr. Peterson.

"Ehh, not so good." explained Jasper.

"Well you should feel a little different," said Dr. Necros.

"Why is that," asked Jasper. "because of the injections?"

"Yes, and that is why we have come to see what you can do," said Dr. Valentine.

"Do, what could the injections you gave me make me do?"

"We will see," replied Dr. Valentine.

They open Jasper's cage door and walked him over to a small silver table to the right of the room.

"Set right here on the table," said Dr. Peterson.

Jasper did as he was told and sat on the cold surface of the table.

"Now," said Dr. Peterson, "I need you to say ahh."

Jasper opens his mouth and said 'ahh', while Dr. Peterson looks into his mouth.

"Hmmm... everything seems to be normal here," said Dr. Peterson. "Now I need to check your reflexes. Put your left leg right here."

Jasper put his left leg over the side of the table, while Dr. Valentine gave Dr. Peterson a small silver instrument. Dr. Peterson lightly hit Jasper's nee with the instrument. Jasper's leg moved a little.

"That seems to be normal," said Dr. Peteson. "Now let's check your vision."

Dr. Petrson gave Jasper a pach to caver his eye.

"Now, I need you to try to read this on the wall," said Dr. Peterson.

"OK," said Jasper who is not looking as mad as before, and seems to be interested in this research.

"J, U, S, T, O, W, P, C, E, uh.. and M. Was that good?" asked Jasper.

"You bet," said Dr. Peterson. "You read the bottom line in record time!"

"Wow," said Jasper.

"Well that's it for today," said Dr. Peterson.

"But we just started," said Jasper.

"We have to go to the rats next, and that will take all day." said Dr. Peterson.

"So you all are just going to leave me in that cage all day right? Don't any of you trust me? I can't go anywhere so just let me out."

The scientists had only planed to let Jasper out to go to the restroom, take a shower, eat and be tested.

"What do you think Dr. Valentine?" asked Dr. Peterson. "He does not seem have any intentions of escaping."

"Well... OK," said Dr. Valentine. "He can stay out."

"Thanks," said Jasper.

"You just stay in this room," said Dr. Necros.

"OK,OK," said Jasper. "I will."

Jasper stayed on the table and watched the three scientists walk towards the rats.

Nicodemus is now wide awake and looking at the scientists coming his way.

"Suilvan, Suilvan, are awake?" asked Nicodemus.

"Yes I know, I see them coming too," said Suilvan.

Dr. Valentine went strait over to Suilvan's cage and looked inside to see him. Suilvan jumped back, and looked strait into Dr. Valentine's eyes. Dr. Valentine opened Suilvan's cage door, and reached out for him. Nicodemus saw this and said for Suilvan not to do anything that would upset him, and Dr. Valentine could not understand what Nicodemus had just said. He could only hear a skraking sound from the cage next to him.

"What did you say," asked Dr. Valentine. "I am coming over to your cage next."

Dr. Valentine slowly picked up Suilvan, and took him over to a large maze on the other side of the room. Dr. Valentine then put him in the maze and got out a clipboard and pencil from a desk near by.

(What is this) wonderd Suilvan.

The floor to Suilvan is strange to the touch, and his eyes started to water, and he began to feel dizzy. Suilvan could not undersatnd why he felt this way, and what is doing in here.

Once Suilvan could see that this is his chance to escape, he runs down the maze until he was shocked by something that is placed on the floor. He turns and runs to the right and gets shocked again by the floor.

"What does he think he is doing?" asked Dr. Necros.

"I guess he is trying to escape," said Dr. Valentine.

"Look he has stopped, and is looking over the site to see if he can escape over there," said Dr. Valentine.

"Jasper is here, why don't we just ask him," said Dr. Necros. "What do you think about this Jasper?"

"Well... all the rats that I have worked with do that anyway. It is just natural for them to solve problems," said Jasper.

"Is that so, well than I guess that we will just have to do more testing," said Dr. Necros.

Dr. Valentine then slowly picks up the confused rat, and puts it back in it's cage. Then he went over to Nicodemus's cage, opened the door, and slowly picks him up and takes him over to the same place as Suilvan. Nicodemus was put in the maze, and the floor had the same affect on him as well, but he is different in a way, and Dr. Valentine notice this.

"This rat here seems to be thinking a lot more than running," said Dr. Valentine.

"Yes, he does seem to be the thinking type," said Dr. Necros. "What do you think Jasper?"

"Well he does seem to be a smart rat, but I don't know," said Jasper.

"OK then, just keep testing him," said Dr. Necros.

Dr. Valentine took notes on Nicodemus's intelligence, and continued to test him for about an hour. Nicodemus had found how to get out of the maze six times, Dr. Valentine, Dr. Necros, and even Jasper was amazed at the results.

Then they did the rest of the rats. It took about five hours, but soon they were done.

"That's all for the rats," said Dr. Necros. "Now... to the mice!"

Dr. Valentine picked up Nicodemus, slowly put him back in his cage, and closed the door. Then they all waked over to the mice and did the same tests with them. Once they were done,(in about four hours) Dr. Necros said that (Jasper could stay out of his cage, but can only stay in this room.) Jasper had agreed and stayed in the room, the Dr.'s left the room as soon as he did. Jasper knew that the door was locked, he could hear the click of the key when they had closed the door.

"Now," said Jasper to the mice and rats. "Let me tell you about a place called the Animal Lifestyle Studies of Natural Intelligence." (Jasper thought that since he had noting to do for who knows how long, that he would just tell them about the mice and rats of ALSNI. He told them about how the ALSNI came to be, and famous mice and rats of the past.

So as days, weeks and months of testing went by. The mice and rats seem to have gotten smarter, and Jasper seems to be getting smaller. Ever since Dr. Valentine gave Jasper a injection about seven weeks ago, Jasper seems to be getting smaller and smaller. He was about 5.6 feet tall, and now he is about 5.2 feet tall. Jasper knew that he was getting smaller, and he thought that it has something to do with the injection that Dr. Valentine had gave him. Dr. Valentine did not tell Jasper what the ijection was for, he just told him that it is for his health. None of the less, Jasper continued to tell the mice and rats about ALSNI.

Dr. Jackson came in that afternoon to check up on Jasper, and to put up a calendar on a wall nearby the rats cages. Jasper looked at the calendar that Dr. Jackson had just put up. It read. (May 19, 1980).

"Ahh... Dr. Jackson I think that that calendar is a little off," said Jasper.

"What do you mean?" asked Dr. Jackson.

"It's should say May 19, 2008."

"Are you crazy? The year is 1980."

"But how? When you kidnaped me from Houston the year was 2007."

"I did not look at a calendar throughout that trip, and I did not need to to know that the year was at that time 1979!"

"We must have went through a time zone or someting," said Jasper.

Just then Jasper remembered that strange sting feeling that he had on his way up here.

"Do you remember a srange feeling coming back to Wichita that year you had kidnaped me?" asked Jasper.

"Yes I do, and a srange feeling going to Houston as well, but forget about it! The year is 1980!"

"You maybe right," said Jasper, "the year just maybe 1980."

"Now, said Dr. Jackson, "I am going to be testing you since Dr. Necros is on vacation for three weeks."

"OK... than what are you going to do first?" asked Jasper.

"Well first we need to put your cloths in the dryer, they seem to be too big for you now."

"I know," said Jasper.

"We do have ways of shrinking your cloths to where they could fit you at any size."

Dr. Jackson went over to a closet, opened it, pulled out a white shirt, a pare of black pants and a lab coat. Then walked over to Jasper.

"Here," said Dr. Jackson. "Go to the bathroom and put these on."

"OK," said Jasper, and he went in the bathroom at the back of the room.

While Jasper is inside Dr. Jackson started a new test with the mice and rats. He is now teaching them how to read by a record that he had made. The record plays a word three times every minute. Like:

"Are."

"Are."

"Are."

And Then:

"Aiee."

"Aiee."

"Aiee."

Then it would say:

"Tea."

"Tea."

"Tea."

and then all the words would be heard at once:

"Are."

"Aiee."

"Tea."

"Rat."

During this time there will be shapes appearing on a light screen next to a wall, so the rats can see it. Then shapes on the screen will be shapes of objects that the rats have seen on the streets before. Like a picture of another rat or something like that. Dr. Peterson, Dr. Jackson George and Julie came up with this idea, and figured that the rats should be able to recognize these images on the wall.

Once Jasper came out of the bathroom looking just like a scientist, and Dr. Jackson told him about his plan for teaching the mice and rats how to read. Jasper just could not believe what he heard.

"You are going to teach the mice and rats how to read?" asked Jasper in a strange way.

Yes, and it is possible. You out of all people should know that."

"Why is that?"

"Because you know a lot about mice and rats."

"I don't know THAT much about them, if I know a lot about them I would not have to get rid of the ones that don't act right. I would be able to teach them how to live on there own town instead just keeping the mice and rats that already know how."

"Oh, OK," said Dr. Jackson.

"I still can't see how it could work," said Jasper.

"You will see soon enough."

"Why does everyone keep telling me that?"

Dr. Jackson went over to the rats. Then he sat a box on a table near the rats cages. He then put up a screen on the wall across from the rats so they could see it. Jasper is just looking at what Dr. Jackson is doing, and is wondering if this could realy work. Once Dr. Jackson was finished, he started to them how to read with his box.

"Jasper, I may need your help," said Dr. Jackson.

"With what?"

"With keeping the mice and rats calm."

"How am I going to do that?"

"Just talk to them or something."

"OK... if you think that will help.

Jasper went over to the rats and stud next to there cages.

"I am tired of talking to you all, Jasper said. "None of you ever talk back."

What's that?" asked Dr. Jackson.

"Oh, noting," said Jasper.

Dr. Jackson went strait to work on his new idea, and Jasper just talked to the rats while he did. The mice and rats seemed to like Jasper for some reason. Most of them seem to think that he maybe the key to getting out of here.

Weeks have past since Dr. Jackson first tryed out his idea, and Jasper is still getting smaller every day. It is now June 28, 1980, and the idea of teaching the mice and rats how to read seems to be working. The rats have been able to read test patterns in order of them to get through different mazes. The mice have done just that same, but not as good as the rats. Dr. Jackson expected this before he started the tests. Dr. Necros had came back from his vacation two weeks ago, and does not seem to be surprised that Jasper is so small. He just looked at him and said: "You need to eat more, it helps you grow." Jasper just could not understand what was going on.

Time just seemed to go by fast as Jasper got smaller, and the mice and rats got smarter. Jasper still looks like he is 17, but he is the size of six year old, and his cloths had to be shrunk several times. As Jasper continues to get smaller he starts to hear mumbling sounds in the room, and evreyday those sounds seem to be getting clearer. Jasper could not find out where the sounds were coming from in the room, but as days went by Jasper started to think that the sounds were coming from the cages, of both the mice and the rats. Jasper (as small as he is) walked over to the rats cages. Jasper is now not able to see the top shelf. He gose to the fisrt rows of cages and looks inside.

"Hi, can you talk?" Jasper asked a rat inside the cage.

"Yes... but why can I understand you," asked the rat."

Jasper was about to faint when he heard this, but he caught himself before he did.

"Uh... I... I don't know," said Jasper confusion.

The rat came closer to Jasper.

"I don't know why I can talk to you, but my name is Mike Lester."

"You have a last name?" asked Jasper confusion.

"Yes, we all do. Why are you getting smaller?"

"I don't know, but I think that it has something to do with me being able to talk to you."

"You maybe right," said Mike. "Oh, and I love the idea that you talked about one night about place for the mice and rats of ALSNI! I wish that I had a chance to live there."

"Thanks! Wait how can you know about ALSNI? I could not understand you at that time."

"We could understand you, we just couldn't tell you. I think that the injections that we got made us able to talk to you," said Mike.

"strange," thought Jasper. Hmm... I wonder who else I could talk to. Hello, can anyone understand me?"

"Yes, we understand you," said all the mice and rats in the room.

"Well this is nice, so you all like what you heard about that place I built?" asked Jasper.

"Love it!" said one rat.

"Sounds great!" said another rat.

"Wish I was there!" said one mouse.

"The best I have heard!" said another mouse.

"Fantastic idea!" said another mouse.

"Wish I could see it!" said another rat.

"Thanks, thanks I'm glad you all like the idea."

"We never meet a human that does not like it's own kind," said one of the mice.

"Well now you have, and I am not the only one. I am sure that there are more," said Jasper.

"You know Jasper if you keep getting samller you will have to be put is a cage before the scientists lose you," said Mike.

"Yeh," said Jasper sadly.

"I hope that they put him in here with us," said one of the rats.

"Thanks," said Jasper, "but I think that they would put me in my own cage."

Just then Jasper and the mice and rats could hear the doorknob turn. They all got quiet, and Dr. Necros opened the door.

"What are you doing?" asked Dr. Necros.

"What can I do?"

"Noting I guess, but I heard noise before I opened the door."

"That was just me talking to myself."

"Oh, well is see no harm in that."

Dr. Necros walked over to the mice.

"These mice... they are learing too slow at Dr. Jackson's experiment," said Dr. Necros.

"Believe me they are smart," said Jasper.

"You think so...

"Yes"

"OK..."

Dr. Necros then went over to the rats.

"Now the rats are learning a lot more," said Dr. Necros. "I will be back tomorrow and check on you often. We will just see how small you can get."

"I see... well bye bye," said Jasper.

"Bye"

As soon as Dr. Necros closed the door Jasper begain talking to the mice and rats again. That night Jasper and the mice and rats got to know each other better. They all tolled each others names and were they had came from, and as months went by, Jasper had got so small that Dr. Necros decided to put Jasper in a small cage over by the mice to keep an eye on him. Jasper thinks that he is going to shrink until he is nearly invisible. Jasper is now about the is of a full grown rat.

Weeks went by, and now Jasper is smaller than a rat, but larger than a mouse. Jasper just could not understand how the Dr.s were able to make his cloths the same size as him. They would always bring his cloths back smaller than before, even Jasper's hat is smaller. The Dr.s tried to make Jasper's pocket-watch smaller two weeks ago, and they were able to with the same fluid that Dr. Necros gave Jasper. They had to spry his watch with the fluid to make all the atoms that make up his watch shrink, and after that Dr. Westchace put a lifetime lasting battery in Jasper's watch. Once they were done they gave it back to Jasper, and it was a perfect fit.

One night a mouse called out to Jasper.

"Hey Jasper," whispered the mouse.

"Hu, oh hello Jonathan," said Jasper. Jasper could recognize Jonathan voice thorugh his cage wall.

"Jasper we need to try to escape tonight," said Jonathan.

"What, but didn't Justin, Jenner, Nicodemus and Victor try doing that before?"

"I know, but we must try again"

"If you say so, but how?"

"Justin said that he think he found a way out of here."

"When did this happen?" asked Jasper.

"The time that you were not here."

"Oh, you mean when Dr. Jackson had gave me a tour of the building?"

"I think so, but Justin really thinks that going through the vent on the side of that wall over there may be the way out."

"That screen in front of the vent is screwed on tight, how can we get down there and unscrew the screen before someone sees us?"

"There are some tools in that desk over there, and Justin had pulled out soming that open the screen."

"Oh a screwdriver, ok when do we try to escape again?"

"When It is about 12:00 on your watch tonight."

"OK, does everyone still know how to open there cages?"

"I think all us mice do, but do the rats?"

"I would think so, I told them how too. Some of the rats just read the words on the side of there cage that tells them how to open there cage door."

"It's a good thing that your here to tell us how to open our cages."

"Yeh, it's a good thing that they don't know that I can talk to you all."

"Yeh, and let's hope that they never do."

Jasper and Jonathan had became good friends over the past three weeks. A friend is something that Jasper has not had most of his life, and he likes the idea that his only friend is a talking mouse.

Once it was 12:00, and the Dr.s had left the building. Jasper and the mice and rats had continuos discussions on how to escape from NIMH. Justin had opend his cage and climed down on the bars of the cages below him, to showed everyone were to go. Most of the mice and rats had climed down to see if they could open the screen, but thescreen is screwed on too tight. Jasper was still in his cage looking out his open cage door at how high up he is from the ground. Jasper soon decides to clime down for his cage, and he has to clime down on four cages. He climes down slowly from his cage, then from the cage below him, then the cage below that, and once he climes down from the last cage he is on the ground safely. Jonathan is already on the ground and congratulating Jasper on getting on the ground safely.

"Good jop Jasper, I knew you could do it!" said Jaonathan.

"Thanks, I may be a rich man, but that does not mean that I can't be athletic," said Jasper.

Jasper and Jonathan walked over to the screen and saw the rats that came back from the desk with a screwdriver trying to unscrew the screws on the screen. Jasper had notice that all the mice and rats seem to look almost human. They have pupils on there eyes now, they walk up strait, they have eyelashes, and they seem to have smoother fur than mice and rats that he has seen. Not to mention they can even talk. Jasper did not really pay attention to this at this time, he just wanted to get out. The rats had finally unscrewed the screws and opened the vent, they all looked inside.

"What, said Suilvan, "It looks so dark in there! How can we see were we are going?"

"Just hold on to this thread that I found in that desk, I remember the way to the light in this maze," said Justin.

Justin had found light at the end of the air duct when he had left his cage one night with Nicodimus to see if there is a way out in here. They had a hard time finding there way back, but found out how to get back and into there cages just before Dr. Peterson had came in.

"Are all of you ready?" asked Justin looking back at Jasper and the crowd of mice and rats behind him.

"We're ready," said the crowd.

"I think so," said one of the rats.

"Let's go then," said Justin.
