Flags (How It's Done)

|
Step by step instructions on how I make my flags.
Okay, this is a little treat for some of you who like to make homemade flags or banners. This is just my way of making flags; so sure, there are better, easier ways; but I'm getting better and use what I can without having to pay a company 100+ dallors to custom make just one flag.
Step 1
Using a rotary cutter, I cut the fabric I chose for my flag into the shape and size of the flag I want. Of course, I cut out a size a bit larger than I want since the flag will be smaller once I fold it to be sewn.
Step 2
Using tacks to hold the fabric in place, I draw the design of the soon to be flag using a pencil. It's best if I draft lightly, so once I dye the flag the pencil lead will hardly be seen.
Step 3
Using FabricMate dye pens (which contains permanent dye), I add color.
Step 4
Here's where a sewing machine would come in handy if I owned one; but since I don't, I fold and sew the flag's ends together by hand.
Step 5
Ironing is the next step. This drying process will make the dye permanent, and prevent it from smearing or bleeding in high winds or wet weather.
Step 6
Next I let the flag hang by a fan for 24 hours; while I'll usually work on another. The flag on the far left is about to be worked on again. Here you can tell the size differance of a flag that hasn't been folded and sewed (left), and one that has (middle and right). Reason why I said in step 1 that I cut out a larger size of the fabric than I'll actually use.
Step 7
Here the flag itself is complete. All it needs now is to be stapled to a stick and receive it's decorative spear point; which is placed at the top of the stick.

The United Mustelinae Empire Flag
|
111KB |
A flag I dyed and sewed together. It's kind of hard to explain the history, but these 'United Mustelinae Empire' (UME) flags are basically fictional; and were designs I came up with a couple of years ago - with made-up meanings for several of my short written stories and drawings. |
The UME's Province of Hearthwin Flag
|
134KB |
This is the Hearthwin flag; a province within the Mustelinae Empire.
Brief History: During the medieval era, the UME (back then known as Glenscar) was ruled by Hearthwin, their second king after Aster's unfortunate death. Hearthwin was well known for setting the foundation that changed freedom between beasts, united species of all types within his kingdom. He was also known for his role in preventing of one the most devastating battles from reaching Glenscar. Hearthwin died sometime in November of 1343. Many years later, in 1794, when Glenscar's three year civil war came to an end and became the United Mustelinae Empire; the first province, containing the empire's capital, was dedicated to his name.

The UME's National Security & Civil Defense Flag

The title says it all here. Note the difference in the center cross, where two falchion swords are placed just behind the upper half of the cross. |
Bestwestern Flag
|
6KB |
This flag was designed for my fan fication story "Bestwestern's History 1979". It's green backgrown stands for Bestwestern's grean open valley, while the "BW" in the center stands for Bestwestern. The words around the initials state "The Railroads That Maintain". |
Brlington Flag
|
5KB |
This would be the Brlington (not Burlington) flag from the same story. It has a white background flag with a gold guarantee eagle on the right end. It's a grocery and trucking company. |
Caisco Flag
|
3KB |
The last flag of my fan fiction story is Caisco's. Caisco's flag has blue to the left, a seal in the middle to the left, and an orange and blue oil lamp to the right. |
Large Flags
|
151KB |
I fly a many verity of flags such as all 50 states. Those you see in this picture are my 3X5 foot ones - my largest. So far I have: Texas, Florida, West Virginia, Road Island, Missouri, Arizona, Kansas, Ohio, Nebraska, Illinois, Hawaii, Utah, Maryland, Wyoming, Tennessee, Minnesota, Georgia and Alabama. In the photo, the flag that you see on the upper left hand side is United States, on the lower left is Texas, the one on the upper right is Rhode Island, and the one on the lower right is Florida.
I also make miniature flags. Back in early 2001, (when I first started to collect flags) the flag stores would not have any of the ones I was looking for in stock. Said that they were unpopular state flags, and didn't care to carry them. So, I decided to make the rest of the 50 states that I couldn't get; which was about 45. They where all about 11"X6" in size. |
Santa Fe Flag
|
2KB |
This is another flag from my fan fiction story. On the flag, there's a picture of a railroad track, a road, asphalt, grass, and one of the gold stars from Lake Hoo-Ha. |
