Chapter: 3 Oil, Money and Heat
Throughout the night, the commotion around the Ivan J. Company died down. News paper companies and radio stations around the town where working all night putting together the events of the day. Many didn't even finish putting together the copyrights before it was closing time. Those that did, would be the ones to print or announce it on the Vancin Community News in the morning.
Once morning came, Ludwig was back in his office working on miner plans when Murray then rushed in with a news paper in his paw.
[Murray]
Say Ludwig, did you see today's paper?
(Ludwig then got up from his seat as Murray handed him the paper. Murray points nervously at a section on the front page.)
[Murray]
See see, look at that!
(Ludwig began to read part of the paper out loud)

Oil Stolen From Ivan J. CO.
Headline:
00Last night at 3:34 PM, a called was made from the Ivan J. Company about a robbery of oil from six trucks and twelve keg barrels. Investigators arrived two minutes after the call and shut down the intire factory in five minutes. The VPF took action on the scene three minutes later. There where over one hundred police cars and six ambulances on the scene at 3:46 PM. The VPF then threatened to arrest anyone that would interfere with the investigation.
00Thorne Al La Rosa was the main suspect for the oil robbery. Investigators did find a clue to who was responsible for the crime. Information has not yet been given out, but authorities say that they do have proof that one of La Rosa's members are responsible.

Mayor Attempts Murder
Sideline:
00Mayor Marvin S. Lobic came to the scene at 4:12 PM. They clam that he attempted murder on an investigator once words were crossed, he was then taken to jail by the VPF. They say that he is now in questioning, and that they clam that he was being aggressive to a Rabbit named Albert Shipal. The mayor will be impeach if founded guilty of attempted murder.
00Albert was taken to Lee Hospital where he then died this morning of a punctured lung infection. He had breathing problems with his inhalation system before, and the attack from the mayor damaged it even more. His family has planed to have his funeral on October 18th. The family then plans to sue the mayor $2.000 for the pay of Albert's funeral if he is founded guilty.

[Murray]

Ich bet that der owner of der Vancin Community News forced him to put that as a sideline.
[Murray]
That's really sad, but right now, we need to tell the boss about the oil robbery headline.
[Ludwig]
You think we can be discovered now?
[Murray]
I don't know, but if we are, we'll be in jail for life! Or longer!
[Ludwig]
Echhh... Let's inform Thorne about it then.
(They both ran over to Thorne's office front door. Once at he door, Ludwig knocks on it softly, but loud enough to be heard from inside.)
[A Voice]
Come in!
(Ludwig slowly opens the door. Inside, Thorne is at his desk writing more plans for oil trading)
[Thorne]
And what do you two need?
[Ludwig]
Ich was just informed by Murray about der news, und.. well.. a... Have a look for yourself.
(Ludwig tosses Thorne the paper. Thorne reads the front page, looks up and grins)
[Thorne]
Ya see boys, we now can move on to higher operations!
(Ludwig and Murray look and each other, then at Thorne)
[Murray]
Huh?
[Ludwig]
Eh?
[Thorne]
Look see, we have the police on our tails, we have the authorities looking for US, we have the town looking for ME, what do we know that they don't?
[Murray]
Ah.. well, I don't think...
[Thorne]
That's right Murray, you don't think! Ludwig, do you have any idea?
[Ludwig]
Well, could it be that we have two hideouts?
[Thorne]
I'll tell ya see. They have never seen me before. I never go out and get myself seen in public. That's why if anyone tries to leave, I have to have them rubbed out see. I don't want to do it, but it's for the good of the operation. I don't do it myself personally of course, just the back up men. And then I have all of you doing my jobs for me. No one can ever get my paw prints, just one of our members if they make a mistake. The bottom line is that this town has nothing more than my name and species. All they have are these useless posters about me, and that's not enough evidence to turn me in. As for this murder attempted, what do you expect from this town? We Herbivores are always looked down apron from Carnivores. But not you Ludwig, not you. Your ok, I mean look at you, you have Murray as a friend! And not even us fellow Herbivores can stand being around him for five minutes!
[Ludwig]
Well, ich have never had anything agest Herbivores, und Ich don't plan on to. Ich don't know why most Carnivores like myself dislike you. Ich don't know about most Sables anyway, Ich AM der only Sable in town. Maybe even this state.
[Thorne]
Ah, that's where your wrong see. I was informed last night that we have a new member in our operation. And he just happens to be a Sable.
[Ludwig]
Strange, I've never seen a Sable in this town before.
[Thorne]
One of the boys said that he lived on 12th Street. Now he lives with us.
[Ludwig]
Does he know about what we're doing?
[Thorne]
Not yet, but soon enough. Soon enough he will.

Meanwhile, Abel had just had a peaceful nights
sleep, and was awaken by the sound of a passing freight train. He begins to get ready for breakfast in bed in his new room, when there came a knock at the door.
[A Voice]
Abel?
[Abel]
Yes?
(The door slowly opens and Jack comes in with a glass of orange juice in his huffs)
[Jack]
Here you go pal, and it's fresh squeezed.
(Abel smiles, and takes the glass with his paws)
[Abel]
Thank you sir!
[Jack]
Don't mention it kid. Oh, and call me Jack, just Jack.
[Abel]
Ok Jack.
[Jack]
Oh, and kid. I got someone on the other side of town that would like to meet ya.
[Abel]
Oh? who?
[Jack]
You'll see, just chow down. We'll go there once you're done.
Jack walks out of Abel's room and closes the door. Abel hurries and finishes his breakfast of beacon, eggs, toast, and orange juice. He gets out of bed and puts on his trenchcoat, quickly walks over to the door, opens it, walked out, and then slowly closes it behind him. He then runs over to Jack and Steven who where setting at a large round wooden table in the middle of the pump room eating their breakfast and reading the papers.
[Abel]
Hey Jack, hey Steven! I'm ready!
[Jack] *looks up from his paper*
Good kid, let's go.
[Steven]
Hey, I'm not done with my coffee yet!
[Jack]
Forget about it! Abel want's to go over there now.
[Steven]
Fine.
(All three of them quickly walk over to the door with Jack in front. Jack then opens the door for Abel)
[Jack]
You first Abel.
(Abel quickly walks out the door followed by Steven and Jack, who then locks the door behind him)
[Jack]
Follow me kid, and stay close.
Abel stuck close behind Jack with Steven following behind as they walk quickly through the train yard and into the filed. They walked into the ally where Abel and Jack first met. Once arriving into the town's streets, they walk for twelve blocks down 14th Street, pass Abel's old job at Masie's Bar, turned right down 17th Street, and made a left on 19th Street. They slowly walk over to the front door of the same five story black building that Ludwig and Murray works in. Jack pulls open the front door and let's Abel and Steven inside before he walks in himself. Jack then walks ahead of them.
[Jack]
All right Abel, I want you to flow me, but be very quiet. Steven, you stay here until I get back.
[Steven]
Right.
(Jack quietly walks up the left stairs followed by Abel. They walk up until they get to the fourth floor and stop.
[Jack]
Ok kid, make it look good.
(Abel nods and straitens out his coat)
[Jack] *shacks head*
No kid.
(Jack grabs Abel's coat and unstraitens it even more than it was before)
[Jack]
That's better, let's go.
Abel shrugs, and once Jack opens the door, he slowly walks in ahead of Jack, not noticing until he looked over his shoulder.
[Abel]
Aren't you coming?
[Jack]
No kid. I'll be right outside with Stev.
(Abel turns back around and looks at Thorne. Thorne looks at Abel carefully as if he where scanning him. He then puts out his hand)
[Thorne]
Welcome Abel.
[Able] *shacks hands*
Are you the manager?
[Thorne]
Yes, you could call me that.
[Abel]
Ah, well, I want a job working here because you pay mo...
(Thorne stops him from continuing)
[Thorne]
Say no more, I know what you want. And the answer is yes.
[Abel]
You mean I can work for you? and, and get paid ten dollars an hour?
[Thorne]
Why not?
(Abel sighs with a smile for a minute, and sits in the brown wooden chair next to him)
[Thorne]
So Abel, I see that you are a Sable. Aka Carnivore.
[Abel]
Ah... yes sir.
[Thorne]
Well, then you are perfect for this job. You have the ability to take care of business.
[Abel]
What will I be doing?
[Thorne]
Your first job is to meet everyone in the pack see.
[Abel]
Ok, where are they?
(Thorne gets up from his desk and walks over to Abel. He then walks pass Abel and stops at the front door.
[Thorne]
Come on Abel, I'm gona show ya the gang.
Abel gets up from his chair and walks out the door while Thorne is holding open for him. They turn to the left with Thorne in front, and walk down the hallway passing several doors.
[Abel]
So ah... Boss. What do I call you really?
[Thorne]
Just call me Al for now.
[Abel]
All right, Al.
Thorne gives Abel a wink while putting a sager in his mouth and lighting it with a small silver lighter he pulled from his pockit. They both stop by a large brown wooden door.
[Thorne]
This is the Bank Room. It is where all of our shipment pays off.
Thorne slowly opens the door, and steps aside to let Abel have a peek. Inside, Abel can see stack after stack of money, gold, and silver. Two male white Ducks wearing long black trenchcoat are working inside stacking the gold over the silver.
[Duck 1]
Hey Boss!
[Duck 2]
Hey Boss!
[Thorne]
Hiya boys. Abel, meet John and Sebastian, head of the money sorting and gold and silver stacking.
[Abel]
Hello.
[John]
Hey Abel glad to meet cha!
[Sebastian]
Hey, welcome to the pack!
[Thorne]
Like what cha see so far?
[Abel]
Looks impressive! I've never seen so much... valuables in my life! This job must really be great! To have this much, I can now understand how you can give your employees ten dollars an hour.
(Thorne, John, and Sebastian laughs)
[Thorne]
Ha ha! Yeah, and that's not all see. Come.
Abel quickly walks out before Thorne closes the door. Thorne then leads Abel to another door and stops.
[Thorne]
This room is where we keep all our oil made products.
Thorne slowly opens the door, and both him and Abel walk in. Inside, the room is filed with many different shapes and sizes of tires, belts, rub rings, and rubber tops. Seven workers are inside melting and shaping oil with special large gray tugs. The workers then see Thorne and Abel at the door.
[Thorne]
Now before you all say anything, let me introduce each of ya to the newcomer. Abel, the black Rabbit in the gray jacket over there is Dave, the gray Dog in the orange jacket is Leo, the green Duck in the black long coat is Plucky, the brown Wolf in the long brown trenchcoat is Martin, the gray Shrew in the black jacket is Justin, the white Ferret in the black and white long overcoat is Duncan, and the orange and white Squirrel in the black jacket is Mark. And everyone, I would like for you to meet the Sable next to me, Abel.
[All of the Workers]
Hi/Hey/Hello Abel!
[Abel]
Heyyyyy.
[Thorne]
Ok Abel, now let's have a look behind door number three. Seyas all.
[All of the Workers]
By/see ya later Boss! Abel!
(Thorne and Abel walk out of the room while Martin closes the door for them. Thorne leads Abel to the next door and stops)
[Thorne]
This is the room of my assistant. I think you'll find him... more your type.
(Thorne pushes the door open and walks in followed by Abel. Ludwig looks up from his desk to see them approaching)
[Thorne] *gives Ludwig a serious look.*
Hiya Ludwig, and call me by my name...
[Ludwig] *winks back*
What brings you here, Boss?
[Thorne]
Well, remember the Sable I was talking to you about earlier today? Well, here he is.
(Ludwig and Abel look at each other in disbelief)
[Ludwig]
Ich can't believe it, another Sable!
[Abel]
Hi sir, I'm Abel. Are you German?
[Ludwig]
Ja, Ich am.
[Abel]
Neat! I'm glad I'm not the only other Sable in this town. My family left a long time ago, and I've been alone ever since.
[Ludwig]
Ack! Ich am sorry to here that. Ist there anything ich can do for you?
[Abel]
Not really, but this day sure is changing my luck around!
[Ludwig]
Gut! Say Boss, how about a break so Ich can show Abel around?
[Thorne]
Sounds good to me, show him around during lunch.
[Ludwig]
All right, at 3:00 PM.
[Thorne]
Uh Abel, are you going to stay here until lunch or go see more of the employees?
[Abel]
Um, I want to, but... It's been a long time since I've see another Sable.
[Thorne]
I know what ya mean. Say Ludwig, Abel here mite make a good partner for you someday.
[Ludwig]
Ich kind of have a partner already... Murray.
[Thorne]
What has he done, in his life time with us, that has been like a partnership?
[Ludwig]
Well, he... but he... he was... Your right, can't think of a thing. But he's still my partner, even though he ist an outdated one.
[Thorne]
Ever heard of a three-way partnership?
[Ludwig]
Now Boss, nicht another partner! Ich told you at first Ich work better alone.
[Thorne]
Yeah, but that was before I signed you to another job.
[Ludwig] *looks disappointed*

[Abel]
Excuse me, but who's Murray?
[Thorne]
Murray is a brown and gray Chinchilla that works as a partner for Ludwig here. He's not much to talk about, but if you would like to see him I can call him down for you.
[Abel]
No. I don't want to take him away from his work.
(Thorne and Ludwig laugh for a minute)
[Thorne]
Work! What work!? That Murray would probably prays you if you took him out of his office for even a minute! He hates work, he like sleep, and he loves whisky. That's all I can say about him. Ludwig, call him down here for me.
(Ludwig picks up the black phone on his desk and calls for Murray)
[Ludwig]
Hello?
[Murray]
Yes?
[Ludwig]
Murray, this ist Ludwig, Ich need for you to come to my office right away. Der Boss und...
[Thorne]
What happened?
[Ludwig]
He left while Ich was talking to him.
(Ludwig's door then quickly opens, and Murray cames rushing in)
[Murray]
Hey Ludwig, what cha need?
(Murray stops right next to Thorne)
[Murray]
Uh... hey... Boss...
[Thorne]
Hello Murray...
(Murray gulps)
[Thorne]
Now Murray, I'm not mad at ya, but next time, wait until Ludwig is finishes talking to you before you come barging in here.
[Murray]
Right Boss, it won't happen again.
[Thorne]
Now Murray, I would like for you to meet Abel, he's going to be working with you two.
*Abel and Murray shake hands*
[Murray]
Glad to meet cha, but haven't I seen you somewhere before?
[Abel]
Aren't you the one that comes in Masie's Bar everyday?
[Murray]
Yeah, and your that bartender. Say, what are you doing trying to get a job here now? Don't tell me that Masie's is closed down!
[Abel]
No, it's still there. I left because the pay was low.
[Murray]
I see...
(Murray walks over to Ludwig and whispers in his right ear)
[Murray]
That's him.
[Ludwig]
That's him what?
[Murray]
He's the one that makes my drinks at Masie's. With him working here now, I can have my Dara Lee Coattail anytime I want.
[Ludwig]
Murray, he doesn't work at Masie's anymore. He doesn't have der supplies he needs to make that.
[Murray]
We'll see about that.
[Thorne] *grins*
Ah, a privet conversation. Your not whispering just for fun now are ya? Heh, heh.
[Ludwig]
That was low, even for you Boss.
[Murray]
Yeah! I was just telling Ludwig about how I know Abel from Masie's bar. He makes my drinks.
[Thorne]
Oh, well than I'm glad you know each other already. Now, I must get back to my work. I'll come back for ya after lunch Abel. Murray, you can stay here until lunch since it's all most time.
(Throne walks to walks out and the door closes automatically behind him. Murray slowly walks towards Abel with his paws behind his back)
[Murray]
So ah... Abel. Think you can still can make me my Dara Lee Coattail?
[Abel]
Yeah, but I don't have the things I need to make it. If you can give me the juices and water pump I need, then I can make it for you.
[Murray]
Ah, where do I find those things?
[Abel]
You can't, it has to be shipped here from other companies. Unless if you have a car, than we can drive over to the company in Green River.
[Murray]
Green River! That's too far away! Plus all I have is a motorcycle. Ludwig here has a car.
[Ludwig]
Oh no... My car can't even get me from here to Masie's. That's why it's been in der shop.
[Murray]
Heh, I should have known that since you walk home everyday.
[Abel]
I don't have one. I can't even get enough money to buy a tire, much less a car! That's another reason why I left my old job.
[Ludwig]
Hum, 3:00. Time for lunch.
[Murray]
Where do you want to go?
[Ludwig]
Let's go to T. J. Morris Restaurant.
[Murray]
Hey, haven't been there in a while!
[Abel]
Isn't T. J. Morris a strict Herbivore/Omnivore only place?
[Ludwig]
Yeah, but Carnivores like us have a saying, go as you please. No one ist going to stop us Abel. Anyone that even lays a hand on a Carnivore in there would be thrown in jail.
[Abel]
So I can really just go in there without anyone trying to stop me?
[Ludwig]
That's right, und plus Ich have nothing agest Herbivores/Omnivores. So Ich will go there anyway.
[Abel]
I don't know...
[Ludwig]
I'll protect ya Abel, no one ever bothers me.
[Abel]
Oh... ok. Let's go then.
[Murray]
That's a long walk! Can't we just find another way to get there?
[Ludwig]
Well, we could take der bus Murray, but you know where you would have to sit.
[Murray]
I'd rather walk then.
Ludwig, Murray, and Abel quickly walk over to the door, Ludwig opens it, Murray and Abel walks out, then Ludwig walks out with the door closing automatically behind him. They walk down the stairs to the first floor, and walk out the front doors to the building. Once outside, Ludwig points to the left down 19th Street.
[Ludwig]
This way.
They walked down 19th Street until they got to 6th Street, turned left and walked across the road to the other side. After they've walked twelve blocks down 19th Street, Murray begins to tire.
[Murray]
Come on you two, my feet are killing me...
[Ludwig]
Ah, your feet are nicht designed like ours. Our feet are shaped for long walks. At least that's what Ich read back in school.
[Murray]
Well, give MY feet a break! Just for a minute! PLEASE!
[Ludwig]
All right Murray. Abel und I will just sit over here.
(Ludwig and Abel walk over to a wooden beach and sit down. Murray continues to rest on the sidewalk as people passed him by)

Ten minutes has passed and Murray is still resting on the sidewalk.
[Ludwig]
Look Murray, we're going without you if you don't get up! We only have an hour for lunch!
[Murray]
All right, all right! I think I'm ready.
[Ludwig]
Gut! Now let's go.
Ludwig, Abel, and Murray then get back on their feet, and continue on to T. J. Morris. They arrived at the corner of 6th Street and Main Street. There, the T. J. Morris Restaurant is in site. They walk across the street, and inside the already open doors to the restaurant. Inside, there are Herbivores by the dozens, and they are all ether eating, talking, or waiting on their orders. The restaurant has red wood all around the upper walls and floors. The floor is checkered with shiny gray and brown tiles. There are pictures on the walls of famous Herbivores that have fought for freedom in certain times. The crowd of Herbivores then turn and look at Abel. Abel backs up behind to Ludwig. Ludwig looks at him, and then the staring crowd. He frowned, shows his very sharp teeth, sharp claws, and gives the crowd a fierce stare, which soon made everyone look away from him. They then walk over to a table for four and sit down. Abel looks over at Ludwig who is relaxing with his arms across his dinner chair, his hair standing up, and yet, he has a peaceful, but strait look on his face.
[Abel]
I didn't think that you we're the type that could do that.
(Ludwig is flapping his west while looking at his claws, he then looks at Abel.)
[Ludwig]
Ich only do that when it's necessary.
(A brown female Rabbit walks up to the table Ludwig, Murray, and Abel are sitting at.)
[The Rabbit]
Hello boys, can I get cha something for the road?
[Murray]
Hey Doll Face! Let's say you and me go steppen sometime.
[The Rabbit]
Ha ha ha... I don't date guys that hang around Carnivores. No offense Ludwig or.... say what's your name kid?
[Abel]
It's Abel.
[The Rabbit]
Ah, well my name's Christina, but most of the boys here just call me Doll Face. So what's your order gona be boys?
[Ludwig]
Well, I'll have der Heg Tie Stake with hahbrowns.
[Christina]
You know, it's a good thing we sale meat here too. Now what do you want?
[Murray]
I would like the Pizza Mushroom Plxa with extra cheese.
[Christina]
O... k. And what would you like?
[Abel]
Um..... I don't have any money on me.
(Ludwig then pulls out some money out of his coat pocket, and hands it to Abel.)
[Ludwig]
Now you do.
(Abel then smiles and takes the money.)
[Able]
Thanks.
[Ludwig]
No problem.
[Abel]
Ok, then I think I will have the BBQ Brisket with a side order of red rice.
[Christina]
Ok... your orders will be ready in ten minutes.
Christina then left as Ludwig, Murray, and Abel waited on their order. Within two minutes, Fifi walked in from the entrance of the restaurant. Abel saw her and gasped.
[Murray]
What's wrong Abel?
[Abel]
That Skunk, I, I know her.
[Murray]
Really, from where?
[Abel]
On the corner of 12th Street last night. A Fox named Steven tried to nab her.
(Ludwig and Murray then look in shock.)
[Ludwig]
Your der one that scared Steven off that night!
[Abel]
Yeah, but why does that surprise everyone?
[Ludwig]
Because Steven ist one tuff Fox to crack! It takes a miracle to scare him, und Ich guess your it.
[Abel]
Well, it was nothing really.
Abel then gets up from his seat, and walks over to Fifi who is standing in the door-way looking around.
[Abel]
Hi Fifi, remember me?
[Fifi]
Wee Abel, Ah know vou! Vou are zee one who saved moi last night. But what or vou doing here? Carnivores aren't allowed.
[Abel] *Points*
I have some friends over there that helped me get in.
(Fifi then looks over to where Abel is pointing. She then spots Ludwig and Murray who are looking at her from their table.)
[Fifi]
Ah think ah know him...
[Abel]
Who? From where?
[Fifi]
Can't remember, a long time ago. And that Sable looks really femilure.
[Able]
Oh, him. You mean Ludwig?
[Fifi]
Ludwig huh... Ah don't remember that name...
[Abel]
Want me to intrados you to him?
[Fifi]
Ah... no. Could we just have a little take over there?
Abel then looks at Ludwig while pointing to a table in the corner. Ludwig slowly nodded.
[Abel]
Ah.... ok, sure.
Abel and Fifi walk over to the table in the corner and sits down across from each other.
[Fifi]
Do vou REALLY know them two?
[Abel]
I just met them today on the other side of town. I'm getting my job application from there to work for a factory.
[Fifi]
Which factory?
[Abel]
At the Ivan J. Company... I think...
[Fifi]
Isn't that zee place that got robed by La Rosa?
[Abel]
Yeah, but what does this have to do with them?
[Fifi]
Nothing, it's just that working there ezz to dangerous! La Rosa's gang wants all zee oil from zee company to smuggle it into other states.
[Abel]
Ah, it's worth the money. Besides, what are the odds that I will even be around if that happens again? I don't think that I will ever even see La Rosa since he never shows himself. I wonder what I would do if I ever came face to face with him.
[Fifi] *Giggls*
Vou probably run away crying.
[Abel]
Heh, I'm not afraid of him. Well... maybe a little.
[Fifi]
Vou'd be crazy not to!
[Abel]
Yeah....
[Fifi]
Say Abel, maybe we can get together later today. Vour silly, ah like that in a man.
[Abel] *Smiles*
Tha, tha, that would be great! Where could I meet you?
[Fifi]
Meet me at zee Vancin Golders Baseball Stadium at 10:30.
[Abel]
Ok, I'll be there. If I'm a little late, please don't leave.
[Fifi] *Giggles*
Ah won't.
[Ludwig] *Yells softly to Abel from his table*
Come on Abel, your foods ready!
[Abel] *Looks at Ludwig and Murray, and then back at Fifi*
I have to go now, I will see you again later today.
[Fifi] *smiles*
Bye... Go eat with vour friends.
(Abel gets up and walks over to his table and sits down next to Murray. The smell of his food tingles his nose)
[Abel]
Ah! This food smells good, but very strong!
[Ludwig]
You must haven't had gut food in a long time.
[Abel]
You're right about that. I haven't had enough money in the past to by such foods.
[Murray]
Well, now that your working with us, you'll have enough money to buy yourself an apartment on the North side of town.
[Ludwig]

Do like you do with the Carnivore dames, ignore them. For some reason that seems to make them stick to you.
[Ludwig]
Look Abel, don't lesion to him. Ich don't even try to have that happen to me, Ich most rather prefer to be alone. But Ich guess der only thing Ich can say ist be yourself. Don't be an actor und commit fake love. If you love someone because of their looks, then that ist fake love. Love someone for who they are, not how they look. If you both love each other for who you are, then you would already know each other's faults within time, expect them to happen, thus except it.
[Murray]
