The Anthropomorphic Fandom (Page 2)

I first started out in the fandom as someone who was interested in helping others. On the TTA group, they had UKE Awards every year rewarding those with excellent art and mostly story writing. I became a presenter one year and presented the nominees. How we did this was by E-mail. We'd send the information to the group, and whoever it's referring to would reply. Doing this, we also needed a voting form so members of the group could vote and rate the art and stories they've seen and read. I created this form in 2002 and it was a success. The creator of the UKE Awards said it helped make things a lot easier.
Later on that year I expanded my interest in the fandom and joined other groups. How fortunate was I to find a "Houston area" furs list. All of the people in the fandom that I've known until then were scattered about all over the world. With a Houston area group I'd be able to actually meet people. This was a big step though, as not many people believe in meeting people from off the Internet. It makes sense to a certain level. I figure you meet people in real life you don't know everyday anyway, so there's not much of a difference. We all didn't know each other at one point. Though I am not the type of person that will meet someone off the Internet for the first time in the privacy of their own home. People who do that I will agree, are ignorant.
The way I handled this, was to meet someone in a pubic area like a book store, etc., and asked my Mother to come along so she can know a little more about what I'm interested in. She did indeed find some of my friends interesting, as they wrote novels and such and she likes books. Such of those were Tristan (Black Wolf), he was the first furry I ever met.
One day there was a huge "fur gathering" as we call it, that was at an Asian restaurant down on Richmond. My Mother drove me there to meet everyone and I was nervous. I was going to get to meet a group of people within the fandom, and was hoping they were as nice as they were online. Sure enough, they were, and much more. They realized that I was nervous and instantly tried to make me feel welcomed. Such of those that did so were Gwaland, Rowena, Star, Nuada and Mythus. Mythus of all things was a truck driver. So I got a lot of information on if I'd like to become one myself.
